Here’s to Fifteen Years
October 24, 2019
This week, OpenSymmetry turns fifteen years old. It was a whirlwind of a ride – just fifteen years ago, OpenSymmetry was launched as a two-person partnership based out of the US and UK, delivering consulting expertise for an incentive compensation management (ICM) tool that would change the game for the industry. Now, OpenSymmetry has a global presence, with clients and employees all over the world and has been honored on the Inc. 5000 Fastest Growing Companies in America list seven times.
To commemorate the occasion, we’ll kick it off with an interview with CEO Anthony “Ant” Hutchins and SVP of Technology and co-founder Jon Gingell as they take us through OS history, remarking on milestones and memories:
Q: How have you seen OpenSymmetry change and grow over the past 15 years?
Ant: The company has matured in every respect in the last 15 years, whilst still retaining a “people first” philosophy. From an internal operating perspective, we have strengthened our processes and scaled the organization, while retaining the ability to be nimble when working with enterprises of all sizes. The only thing that hasn’t changed is the amazing attitude and feeling of family of all our staff! It is truly remarkable.
Jon: It has been humbling to see the number of people join the OS team over the years. Having set up the company from scratch, I always find it amazing to sit back and ponder just how many others have wanted to join and have grown through their experiences with the company.
Ant: Agreed. I am also always happily surprised by the growing tenure of our employees. OS is celebrating its 15-year birthday; meanwhile, there are many people at OpenSymmetry also celebrating their personal 10, 11, 12 and even 13 year milestones with the company, not to mention the huge number of people with 5 or more years. I never take this for granted, as it is the strength of our relationships and depth of experience that drives our growth.
Q: What are some of OpenSymmetry's defining moments from the past 15 years?
Ant: When we grew internationally, that really staked a claim on our global market position. The growth of the team in India, in particular, has given us capabilities that many of our competitors do not have. The India team has a phenomenal culture as they support clients all over the globe. Also the establishment of our Strategy practice really set our course as a vendor agnostic service provider, as we are able to advise our customers independently.
Jon: I consider how OpenSymmetry has been strong enough to grow through short periods of instability, whether expanding to operations on continents where we had never done business before or changes within the internal infrastructure. We pulled through with some style and perseverance, and the last two years have proved that we have stabilized and set off on a trajectory to achieve much greater things.
Q: What are some of your favorite memories at OpenSymmetry?
Ant: Whenever we bring our teams together, there are always great memories. Our party in 2012 in particular was very special, as we were still at a size where it was feasible to bring the entire OS team into Austin for a global company offsite. We rented out the Alamo Drafthouse downtown and had fun over two days throughout downtown Austin. The Company Fit Challenge is also a great example of how OS actively engages in an event in the Austin community, whilst also bringing together folks internally, as we fly in participants from around the world.
Jon: I have too many fun memories to list. However, the one that takes the cake for me is the 2008 Office Olympics!
Fifteen years ago, OpenSymmetry was founded on the belief that planning for, implementing, and maintaining an ICM tool was never something you could buy out of the box, but it takes understanding the nuances of our customers’ business and existing environment – the human touch. Today, that still remains our greatest strength as we strive to meet customers where they are in their ICM journey and empower an unstoppable workforce.
Through the years, OpenSymmetry added technology partners ranked in the leaders quadrant of the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Sales Performance Management (SPM), including Anaplan, IBM, Oracle, SAP, and Xactly. Teaming up with the leading-edge vendors in the industry, we have served over 1,400 clients with expert advice and a fully integrated experience. Today, OpenSymmetry continues to be a dominant global player in the SPM industry.
In these fifteen years, we celebrated wins – big and small, corporate and personal – whether getting kudos from clients for our commitment to their success or OS employees completing the Austin Marathon together. There have been long nights of project work, countless miles traveled, many holidays celebrated together – all woven into a history of close-knit culture and professional excellence. We’re proud to be recognized as one of the Best Places to Work in America and work hard every day to continue to create an environment where employees can innovate, celebrate, and thrive.
It’s been quite a journey, but there are new frontiers calling our name. We are so thankful for our clients, partners, and employees that make the dream possible. Here’s to fifteen amazing years, and many more to come!
